Hello everyone,
This morning we commenced the day with a visit to the Schonbrunn Palace. It was beautifully decorated from floors to ceilings. They have managed to keep the original furniture in most rooms. The castle was very lavish from the gold leaf plated light fittings and elaborate cornices to the parquetry flooring. To our surprise this castle had a lot more colour than the castles we visited in the UK . The rooms had more warmth than those in the UK. The gardens were immaculate with curved hedgings for many kilometres. Nicholas and I were so ecstatic to see little squirrels running around in amongst the trees surrounding the property.
On a guided tour we also saw Parliament House, Winter Palace and Opera House along the Ring Road.
We then spent time walking around the city. Fortunately for Bruno and unfortunately for me most of the shops were closed. The city is very beautiful boasting many historical buildings and churches and buzzing with crowds of people even though it was a public holiday. The Viennese like the Italians love their coffee and cafe’s. The specialty is a chocolate torte. To the boys disappointment this chocolate cake also contained a very fine layer of marmalade. I thought it was really nice.
Tonight we went to a Viennese Dinner and Concert. The concert consisted of classical music from the likes of Strauss and Mozart. We were also entertained with some opera and ballet. I must admit I did not enjoy the latter but thoroughly enjoyed the music.
