Day 4+5: Wurzburg-Nuremberg-Prague Date: 21 -22 December

Hello all,

Since our last entry we have left the German town of Wurzburg and headed for Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic.

Throughout the journey we visited the small town of Nuremberg in Germany which like many European countries was rich in sandstone and timber dwellings, bordered in dark cobbled pavements. During our short stay in Nuremberg we visited the local German markets where many products were being sold, including half a metre Bratwurst sausages which I tried and loved!

We then continued East to the Czech border where we stopped for a toilet break, which quickly turned into a snow fight amongst all the members of the tour as it started to snow.

Two hours later we had arrived in the ‘golden city’ of Prague at around 5pm. After enjoying an authentic Czech three course meal we met a local tour guide, for a “Prague by night” tour. We started the tour by walking  through the steep cobbled stone streets , gradually making our way down to the river which divides the old Prague from the new Prague. Our local tour guide was fantastic making lots of jokes along the way and was very knowledgeable about the history of the city. On arrival at the river we boarded a boat which took us slowly down stream as we passed through the city whilst listening to traditional Czech folk music being played live on the cruise. This was a beautiful site which was enjoyed by all.

The next day we started the morning with another walking tour with the same local tour guide. This tour was once again fantastic taking us through to the 1000 year old Prague Castle and to St Vitus Cathedral. Unfortunately we were not able to go inside the cathedral as preparations were underway for the funeral of Vaclav Havel (the leader who led the previous Czechoslovakia [now Czech Republic] to freedom out of communistic rule in 1989)   who had passed away a day previous to our arrival in the city. He is seen by the locals here as a freedom fighter who changed the country forever. On this note it is amazing how much a country, in particular the city of Prague has developed since the communistic regime was in force a mere 22 years ago. The city has turned from a once dull district (as we have been told) to a beautiful, brilliant and buzzing city rich in culture and in sites.

After the tour we had our own free time to enjoy the markets in Old Town Sqaure followed by another authentic Czech dinner and show on the outskirts of Prague. This was a fantastic night with great food and a great dance show put on by some locals. Nicholas even got asked to dance by our tour director who loves him!

Overall our stay in Prague has been great and from my perspective is definitely one of my favourite cities so far, boasting a deep culture paired with stunning sites! I hope to come back here in the future!
